Pi Gamma Mu, the Department of Sociology and Criminology, the Intercultural Center, the Barry Library, Jobs with Justice, and the Flower Worker Committee invite you to join us in discussing the difficulties flower workers in Colombia are having to both organize themselves into a union and keep their jobs while doing so. As part of this effort, two speakers will be coming to the Barry campus and a schedule of events throughout the Miami area has been released.
Many of you may have read the Miami Herald Friday article about thousands of flower workers in Colombia who will lose their jobs in a few months. One of those workers, Campoelías Bautista, will be at Barry to discuss this and other issues. Also, Stephen Coats, executive director of US Labor Education in the Americas Project (US LEAP), will speak about unionization and labor rights in Colombia.
The talks will take place Friday, Oct. 20 at 12 p.m. in Library Room 308.
This event is part of a series of discussions, performances, and workshops concerning Colombia that will take place throughout South Florida in the next couple of days. The events are organized by the Miami Flower Committee and are open to the public. A schedule is below:
