MIAMI SHORES, Fla.--It was a night of creepiness and horror, not in describing the type of play that the Barry University Baseball Team showcased, but in the uniforms that they were wearing.  In celebration of Halloween, the boys decided to "dress up" a day early, in the First Annual Halloween Scrimmage.  With the likes of Robin the Boy Wonder making diving catches in the outfield, a cow and Hillbilly making great defensive plays on the infield, or Spiderman throwing off the mound and striking out hitters, it was a sight for all those in attendance watching their favorite superheroes, cartoon characters, and real life people playing the game of baseball.

The Black Team was made up of a Cow (Nick Shaw), a Hillbilly (Brett Rossi), Clark Kent/Superman (George Markovich), The Fugative/Richard Kimbal (Danny Marquez), a Softball player (Frank Lorenzo), post-stingray Steve Irwin (Joey Tribou), Rambo (Gabby Casanova), a Sexy Lumberjack (Danny Aguiar), a Barry Rower (Mario Martinez),  a Generic Superhero (Jhonny Perez)  a Mullet Redneck (Jesse Naber), a Hip Hop Thug (Ray Rhoads), a Burglar (Brian Milanes) Spiderman (Robbi Conver) and a Football Official (Brian Martinez).  The Red Team was comprised of a Pregnant Woman (Mitch Rodriguez), an Exposed Hospital Patient (Josh Vargas), a Chippendale (John Servidio), the Grim Reaper (Orestes Gonzalez), a Caveman (John Fraginals), Sponge-Bob Squarepants (Julio Diez), Fred Flinstone (Manny Fernandez), a Pirate (David Armas), a Cowboy (Alex Delgado), Tiger Woods (Evan Ashley), a Weightlifter (Brian Mastin) and a Brian Mastin look-a-like (Bobby Riley).

The Red Team scored three runs in the bottom of the third to take a 3-2 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth, the “Grim Reaper” scored “Tiger Woods” on a sacrifice fly to make it 4-2.  The Red team held the lead until the seventh but couldn't finish as they watched their counterparts scrape together four runs for the victory.

Trailing 4-2 in the top of the seventh, the Black Team pulled off the dramatic comeback, scoring four runs in their half and holding off a Red Team in the bottom of the inning, to win the first annual Halloween Scrimmage by a final score of 6-5.

Standouts for the Black team were "The Prisoner" (2 for 2, 2 RBI), Robin "the Boy Wonder" (2 for 3), "Rambo" (1 for 3, 2 RBI), and the "Sexy Lumberjack" (1 for 2, RBI).  The "Burglar" earned his first save of the fall.  The Red team was led by the "Pregnant Woman" (2 for 3, 2 Doubles), and the “Grim Reaper” who had two RBI on sacrifice flies.

The umpiring crew also did an outstanding job as a Texas Cowboy on his horse (Mike Tomoleoni) and the Yellow M & M (Coach Laz Gutierrez) controlled the "balls and strikes" and "outs and safes".

Cesar Aranguren as Nacho LibreOther costumes on site were a Hospital Patient in a Sombrero (David Bernat), a Barry volleyball player (Jason Brown), a couple of Barry softball players (Mike Davila & Frank Lorenzo), a Hooters waitress (Bobby Hernandez), and Batman (Bryan Leigh).  Head coach Marc Pavao was a Jai-alai player while assistant coach Rey Fuentes was the "Tooth Fairy".  Best costume of the night was the home-made Nacho Libre ensemble of assistant coach Cesar Aranguren.

The Red/Black Series will resume on Wednesday, beginning at 4:30.
