I am very pleased to announce that I have promoted Dr. Linda Peterson to the position of Provost of the University, effective immediately. Since last August, Dr. Peterson has been serving the University community as the Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs.
You may recall that last August I said that I would initiate a national search for a permanent chief academic officer. After serious deliberation, consultation and prayer, I have changed my mind.
Dr. Peterson began her affiliation with Barry in 1979 as a part-time faculty member, becoming full-time in 1981. In the intervening years, Dr. Peterson earned the rank of Professor of Psychology, served as Chairperson of the Psychology Department, Associate Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences, Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences and Associate Vice President for Undergraduate Studies. Twice the members of the Faculty Senate elected Dr. Peterson their Chair.
Dr. Peterson earned a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from the University of Illinois in 1968 and a Master’s degree from the University of Miami in 1977. Continuing her studies at U of M, Dr. Peterson earned a PhD in Psychology in 1980. A serious scholar and experienced clinician, Dr. Peterson has published articles, presented papers at meetings of regional and national professional associations, served as a Statistical Consultant and Evaluator for school districts and a variety of social service agencies.
In addition to her substantive professional experience and expertise, I value who Linda Peterson is as a person. Gifted with a keen intellect and sharp analytical skills, Dr. Peterson is equally kind, understanding and fair. She brings to this leadership position a deep commitment to Barry’s mission and values, a unique understanding of where we have been and where we need to go. Dr. Peterson served on the Strategic Agenda Steering Committee and the Implementation Committee.
The vice presidents and I are delighted that Linda Peterson is eager to assume this leadership position and to serve with us on the Executive Committee of the Administration. I am very confident that Linda will exercise her responsibilities with the greatest care and quality.
Please join me in offering congratulations and support to Dr. Linda Peterson, Provost of Barry University!
