Historically African-American fraternities and sororities expansion information
May 25, 2007

Dear Barry Students,

The Office of Student Activities continues to work on an expansion plan to recruit new fraternities and sororities, specifically, historically African-American organizations to our campus. The National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) serves as the governing board for these nine African-American Greek organizations. This letter serves as a follow up to the first update given during the fall 2006 semester. During that time we were working off a list of fraternities and sororities that current students expressed interest in. While the NPHC organization is composed of 5 fraternities and 4 sororities, students only expressed interest in five of the nine. Below you will find an update on each group and an idea of what to expect when the fall 2007 semester approaches. Please keep in mind that the information presented here is based off of student interest and is subject to change.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
As of spring 2007, we have not made any significant progress with establishing a chapter on Barry's campus. We will revisit Alpha Kappa Alpha at a later time to determine the feasibility of establishing a chapter at Barry University.

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
As of summer 2007, we have resumed contact with their regional and national representatives.

We have been actively working with representatives of Zeta Phi Beta. We are hopeful that we will have a more realistic idea as summer approaches as to their status.

Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.
We are currently working with Kappa Alpha Psi and the potential establishment of a chapter at Barry University.

Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.
As of last fall Omega Psi Phi currently had 3 active members on Barry’s campus. Nationally they are required to have a total of 8 active members to be able to receive an official charter. We are hopeful that they will continue to work towards this goal. As of the closing of the spring at least one of the 3 active members has graduated. We are attempting to reconnect with the organization over the summer.

We still ask that you do not contact the national organizations regarding membership and/or bringing them on to our campus. We are currently connected with the National organizations and are following their expansion orders. Once we have finalized this process, students will see information about the groups.

If you would like to know more information about the NPHC groups please visit the national web page at National Pan-Hellenic Council.

Please note that we are also working with several Multicultural, and Latin Fraternities and Sororities regarding expansion on to Barry’s campus. At this time, we have invited the following groups to expand on campus:

Lambda Theta Phi currently is working towards meeting the university expectations regarding expansion and membership.

Mu Sigma Upsilon continues to recruit young women to their TIARA group. They are still working towards meeting the university expectations regarding expansion and membership.

If you are interested in any of these groups, or would like additional information, please contact the Office of Student Activities at studentactivities@mail.barry.edu or at x3961.

Thank you,
