MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry University Buccaneers skated by the St. Thomas Bobcats 13-6 at Feinbloom Field on Tuesday night in non-conference baseball action.
The NAIA 6th-ranked Bobcats (35-10-1) struck first in the opening frame. Adrian B. Gonzalez singled and scored when Aliercy Nunez doubled off the wall in center field.
But in the bottom of the inning, the Bucs (25-20-1) knocked around Bobcat starter Jhonny Montoya for five runs. Nick Shaw drew a lead-off walk and Brett Rossi followed with a single through the right side. Andrew Frezza reached when Montoya overshot first base on a come-backer and went all the way around to third, with both Shaw and Rossi scoring. Carlos Gomez followed with his fourth homer of the year. Frank Lorenzo rapped out a single to center and Danny Marquez followed with an infield single. After a ground out, Lorenzo scored on a balk by Montoya.
The Bucs added a run in the third. Marquez doubled and came around on a sacrifice fly by Joey Tribou.
In the fourth, the Bobcats trimmed a run off the lead when Nunez tripled and scored ahead of a single by Hamzeld Diaz.
In the fourth, however, the Bucs put up four runs. Shaw drew another lead-off walk, his team-leading 39th, and Frezza singled one out later. Gomez walked to load the bases and Lorenzo plated Shaw by drawing a pass from reliver Omar Chaviano. Aurelio Cicard came in to relieve Chaviano and promptly gave up an RBI single to Marquez. Vargas hit a fly ball to score Gomez and Tribou knocked in Lorenzo with a base hit to right.
St. Thomas cut the lead to 10-5 in the sixth. Nunez was hit by a pitch and Diaz belted a homer to left. Jason Houser followed with a double and after a walk and a wild pitch, scored on another wild toss from Conver.
The Bobcats gifted the Bucs with three runs in the seventh. Shaw reached on an error by second baseman Alex Pascual and went to second on a balk by Phil Lucas. Frezza followed with an RBI single to score Shaw and Gomez drew another pass to put runners at first and second. Dario Martinez came in for Lucas and hit Lorenzo to load the bases. Marquez hit a dribbler to Dan DiFabio at third who bobbled the ball to allow Marquez to reach and Frezza to score, then threw the ball away at first to bring in Gomez.
Angel Hernandez doubled to start the top of the ninth for the Bobcats and scored on a single by Otto Couto to make the final margin 13-6.
Conver (3-1) earned the win with seven innings of work. He allowed five runs on seven hits and a walk, while striking out a career-high nine. Montoya (3-2) took the loss for the Bobcats, allowing five runs (four earned) on four hits and a walk in a third of an inning.
The Bucs play their last home games this weekend in a three-game Sunshine State Conference set with the Saint Leo Lions on Friday and Saturday.
