Barry University Chemistry Club recognized as ‘Outstanding Chapter’

MIAMI SHORES, Florida — The Barry University Chemistry Club/Student Affiliates chapter was recognized by the American Chemical Society (ACS) as an “Outstanding Chapter” for their various activities conducted during the 2006-07 academic year.

ACS Student Affiliate chapters throughout the country were judged on their community service, their participation in National Chemistry Week/Mole Day/Earth Day, green chemistry, attending scientific meetings, department and university service, speakers/field trips, communication, fund-raising, and chapter business meetings.

Over 300 reports were submitted nationally and the Society Committee on Education presented 28 outstanding, 51 commendable, and 96 honorable mention awards.

About 30 BU chemistry majors and minors participated in Chem Club activities along with the help of their faculty advisor, Physical Sciences professor Dr. George Fisher who submitted the annual report. Twelve of the Chem Club students are Student Affiliate members of the American Chemical Society who submitted their work; include Adreina Aguado, Lina Arencibia, Laetitia Barbera, Anladys Carreras, Yaneirys Cruz, Sabrina Gillig, James J. Kelly, Ileana Pazos, Adauri Soprani, Ciara Stroup, Johnny Zephirin, and Sumera-Tariqa Ackbarali.

“The Barry Chemistry Club/ACS Student Affiliates Chapter has a group of highly motivated chemistry majors and minors who are interested in promoting chemistry to the Barry community and to the general public. They do this through various activities such as peer tutoring, scientific seminars, attending scientific meetings, and community service projects such as Habitat-for-Humanity, American Cancer Society Relay for Life, and presenting chemistry magic shows/demonstrations at local elementary school and at a local mall,” Fisher said.

The American Chemical Society will be honoring the award winning chapters at the 235th ACS National Meeting in New Orleans, LA on Sunday, April 6, 2008, which the BU Chemistry Club will be attending. They will be there not only to accept their award but to present their chapter activities and research posters.
