Barry community remembers John Beaubrun, vice provost for information technology
John Beaubrun, vice provost for information technology, chief technology officer and assistant professor of computer information systems at Barry University, passed away on Sunday, October 28, 2007, at the age of 50. He is survived by his mother, Stella; his son, Jonathan; and his sisters Nicole Toby and Dr. Gabrielle (Chunny) Beaubrun. He was the son of Michael Beaubrun, deceased.
 
Mr. Beaubrun had been a member of the Barry University community since 1983, when he began as a part-time faculty member and administrative assistant to the dean of the former School of Computer Science. Within one year, he was named assistant dean of the School of Computer Science and director of the academic computing center. Mr. Beaubrun was then promoted to associate vice president for information technology (1997-03), before moving into his current role as BU’s CTO.
 
Born September 16, 1957, in Trinidad, Mr. Beaubrun had been an integral part of the South Florida volunteering community for more than two decades. He was the Barry/Miami Shores Relay for Life event Chair for the past four years, and was an active member of the American Cancer Society, Boy Scouts, Habitat for Humanity, North Dade Chamber of Commerce and Miami-Dade Chamber of Commerce. He was also a member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, Data Processing Management Association, and the Association for Computing Machinery.
 
Mr. Beaubrun’s love of flying and technology led him to earn his bachelor of science degree from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, majoring in aviation computer technology, and two master’s degrees from Barry University, one in computer education and another in business administration.
 
His numerous honors include: The South Florida Business Journal’s “Up and Comers Award,” 1986; SEFLIN Horizon Award, Southeast Florida Library Information Network, 2000; Good Guy Award, Miami Shores Chamber of Commerce, 2001; and the American Cancer Society’s Spirit of Hope Award in 2004 and 2005.
