Men's Soccer Ousts Spartans in Overtime

MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccanners scored their second straight overtime win with a 3-2 win over the Tampa Spartans in Sunshine State Conference men's soccer action at Buccaneer Field Thursday night.

Selvin Davis headed home the game-winner at the 104:59 mark, just six seconds after Tampa's Devin Shaw was sent off with his second yellow card of the game. Mike Lupton sent the free kick into the box where Andres Lozano flicked the ball over to Davis for the score.

The Buccaneers defeated Christian Brothers 4-3 in overtime on Sept. 10 in their last outing.

The Bucs (4-1-0, 1-0-0 SSC) grabbed an early lead when Mike Lupton fed Carlos Pelaez in the middle of the field and he ripped a shot past Tampa keeper Mike Devore at the 13:19 mark.

Ricado Raposo extended the lead to 2-0 with a goal at 51:18. Pelaez sent the ball into the middle and Mahlon Sullivan knocked it long to Raposo who out raced the Spartan defense and slotted a shot past Kevin St. John in goal.

But Tampa (2-2-0, 0-1-0 SSC) did not go quietly. Federico Della Pica took a pass from Justin Aulls in front of the Buccaneer goal and knocked the shot past Chris Rich to trim the lead to 2-1 at 56:35. Just one minute later, Ingo Fochler lofted a corner kick into the box and Martin Zarate flew in for a header to knot the game at 2-2.

Neither team could crack the goal for the rest of regulation, though both teams had chances.

After battling through the first overtime period scoreless, the red card to Shaw left the Spartans rattled enough to allow Davis to score the game winner.

Barry will be back in action at Buccaneer Field on Tuesday, Sept. 21 against Seattle Pacific at 7:00 pm.
