The Barry University Chemistry Club/Student Affiliates chapter was recognized by the American Chemical Society (ACS) as an “Outstanding Chapter” for their various activities conducted during the 2007-08 academic year.

ACS Student Affiliate chapters throughout the country were judged on their community service, their participation in National Chemistry Week/Mole Day/Earth Day, green chemistry, attending scientific meetings, department and university service, speakers/field trips, communication, fund-raising, and chapter business meetings.

Of the 330 chapter reports submitted, the ACS presented 40 “Outstanding,” 71 “Commendable,” and 96 “Honorable Mention” awards. This is the 10th “Outstanding Chapter” award the Barry Chem Club has received along with three “Commendable” awards in the last 13 years since the club became an official Student Affiliate chapter in 1994.

The award winning chapters will be honored at the 237th ACS National Meeting in Salt Lake City, Utah on Sunday, March 22, 2009. Barry ACS Student Affiliates will be there not only to accept their chapter’s award but also to present their chapter activities and research posters.

About 30 BU chemistry majors and minors participated in Chem Club activities along with the help of their faculty advisor, Chemistry professor Dr. George Fisher. Ten of the Chem Club students are Student Affiliate members of the American Chemical Society who submitted their work. They include: Lina Arencibia, Yaneriys Cruz, Kiyana Edwards, Sabrina Gillig, Nathan Gonzalez, Jeavon Innis, Rafaela Nita, Andrea Orvieto, Ileana Pazos, and Adauri Soprani.

“The Barry Chemistry Club/ACS Student Affiliates Chapter has a group of highly motivated chemistry majors and minors who are interested in promoting chemistry to the Barry community and to the general public,” Fisher said. “They do this through various activities such as peer tutoring, scientific seminars, attending scientific meetings, and community service projects such as Habitat-for-Humanity, American Cancer Society Relay for Life, and presenting chemistry magic shows/demonstrations at local elementary school and at a local mall.”
