DADE CITY, Fla. – Barry University women’s golf team tied for the third at the Sunshine State Conference Championships after shooting 302 in Tuesday’s final round.
The No. 2-ranked Buccaneers tied with Nova Southeastern at 912 in the three-day tournament at Lake Jovita Golf & Country Club. Lynn won the title with an 897. Rollins was the runner-up at 901. Saint Leo finished fifth at 915 in the nine-team, 45-player field.
It was the second time in the 2013-14 season the Bucs have tied for third in a tournament on that course, doing so the first time at the Saint Leo Invitational in the fall. The South/Southeast Regional will also be played at Lake Jovita May 4-5.
Barry’s Martina Bertuccioli finished third, shooting 73-74-74 – 221, three strokes behind individual champion Marie Coors of Saint Leo. Coors, who fired an opening-round 6-under 66 on the par-72, 6,175-yard course, shot 77 in the final round to best Florida Southern’s Emily Rymer by two strokes. Rymer shot 75 Tuesday.
Barry’s Nicky Ferre finished eighth with a 72-76-76 – 224. Teammate Nancy Vergara tied for 10th at 79-73-75 – 227. Maria Paola Fiorio shot 77 in the final round to finish in a tie for 28th at 240. Francesca Perini shot 79 Tuesday, finishing 33rd with a 54-hole total of 244.
Bertuccioli had two birdies in the final round. Her third-place finish was the best of the season for the freshman from Cordoba, Argentina. Ferre, a sophomore from Weston, Fla., also had two birdies in the closing round. She has seven top-10 finishes this season.
Vergara, a junior from Caracas, Venezuela, birdied three holes in the third round. She has four top-10 finishes this season. Fiorio, a sophomore from Torino, Italy, had two birdies in the final round.
Tuesday’s play was delayed for an hour and 36 minutes after lighting struck around 12:14 p.m.
