CONOVER, N.C.—The Barry Buccaneers vaulted from fifth to second place after the second round at the NCAA Division II Women's Golf Championship at Rock Barn Golf & Spa. The Bucs fired a school-record 289 (+5) and made up eight strokes on defending national champions Lynn.
Maria Paola Fiorio led the charge for the Bucs. The sophomore from Torino, Italy, came in at even par for the day, tying the low round, and goes into tomorrow's third round as the individual leader. Despite closing the round with a bogey on 18, she overtook Saint Leo's Marie Coors when the latter took a triple-bogey on the same hole.
Lynn, who shot 297 (+13) today, maintained the lead after two rounds. The Knights, who led second-place Rollins by three strokes entering the day, still lead by three over Barry. Tarleton State is in third after firing 299 (+15). Rollins fell to fourth after a 306 (+22) and Central Oklahoma is fifth after a 307 (+23).
Behind Fiorio (+2), Coors is tied with Lynn's Louise Manalo at three over par. Haley Naught of St. Edward's and Hally Ledbetter from Rollins are tied for fourth at four over par.
Daniela Murray and Nancy Vergara both carded one-over-par 72 today. Murray is tied for 15th at +7, while Vergara (+9) is tied for 22nd. Nicky Ferre and Martina Bertuccioli are tied for 27th in the 72 player field at +10.
The tournament continues on Friday and the champion will be crowned on Saturday.
