DELAND, Fla. – The Barry University women’s rowing team put on a strong showing to start the championship season with a win in the varsity 4+ event of the Stetson Sprints on Saturday afternoon.

Participating in the second heat, the Bucs’ varsity 4+ (Mirline Valentin, coxswain; Janelle Cross, stroke; Robin Cascioli, Elise Carlson, and Rebekah Evans, bow) rowed the fastest time of the two heats bettering the times of Sunshine State Conference rivals Nova Southeastern and Rollins.

In the varsity 8+ (Valentin, cox; Cross, stroke; Cascioli, Carlson, Evans, Stephanie Ricker, Summerlin Knipe, Rhiannon Doka, and Stephanie Logsdon, bow) finished third out of eight shells. Nova Southeastern won the event by two both lengths, and Florida Tech finished second by a half.

“The girls performed extremely well for the first race of the spring,” Sanderson said. “They did exactly what we intended for them to do.”

The Buccaneers will have a month before their next race when they race in a tri-meet hosted by Florida Tech in Fellsmere, Fla. on Mar. 22.
