BOCA RATON, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers fell to the Lynn Fighting Knights 8-1 in Sunshine State Conference women’s tennis action at the McCusker Sports Complex on Tuesday.
Lynn (15-2, 6-0 SSC) jumped to an early 3-0 lead after sweeping doubles play. The third-ranked tandem of Weltz and Alexandra Schunk topped Ildiko Csordas and Caroline Stevens 8-4 in the first position.
The Knights added points with identical 8-3 decisions in the other pair of matches. Katerina Jiskrova and Magdalena Ekert beat Angie Werschel and Helen Wisniewski in the second position while Alisson Siaci and Eleonora Iannozzi downed Berit Peterson and Olivia Lilien in the third slot.
Clinching the match by claiming the first two singles matches, the Knights saw # 14 Siaci beat Peterson 6-2, 6-2 in the fifth spot while Iannozzi dropped Lilien 6-3, 6-2 in the sixth flight.
Lynn added victories in the second, third and fourth positions as well. Seventeenth-ranked Jiskrova handled #25 Werschel in a 6-3, 6-4 decision at the third spot while Ekert came back from a set down to beat Wisniewski 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-6) in the fourth spot.
Schunk, ranked 18th in singles, also had to fight back from a one-set deficit for victory. After dropping her opening frame 7-6 (8-6) against Stevens in the second spot, she rallied to finish out the match 6-3, 1-0 (10-4) in the last match of the day.
The Buccaneers (12-4, 4-2 SSC) earned their lone point in the top singles position after the match was already decided as 10th-ranked Csordas outlasted #20 Weltz 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-6).
The Bucs are back in action on Sunday, Mar. 30 against the Florida Southern Moccasins.
