FELLSMERE, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers picked up a gold medal in the varsity 4+ race at the Florida Intercollegiate Rowing Association Regatta on Saturday.

The Bucs [Athena Corodimas (cox), Janelle Cross (stroke), Robin Cascioli, Elise Carlson, Rebekah Evans], who rowed the fastest qualifying time in the heats, pulled to a 6:52.2 time in the finals, ahead of NCAA Division I crews from Jacksonville and Stetson who tied for second at 6:55.3. Nova Southeastern (7:05.0), Rollins (7:12.0) and Georgia Tech (7:26.5) rounded out the field in the grand final.

“We got off to a good start, but ran into some problems around 500 meters,” head coach Dave Sanderson said afterward. “You have to give the crew credit. They pulled it together and really rowed well over the last 1,000 meters to secure the win.”

In the varsity 8+ race, the Bucs [Athena Corodimas (cox), Janelle Cross (stroke), Robin Cascioli, Elise Carlson, Rebekah Evans, Stephanie Ricker, Stephanie Logsdon, Rhiannon Doka, Summerlin Knipe] finished fourth with a time of 6:17.6 over the 2,000 meter course.

Jacksonville (6:10.3) took the gold, while Stetson (6:11.4) came in second and Nova Southeastern (6:12.2), ranked third in the NCAA Division II poll, came in third.

Fifth-ranked Rollins (6:21.3), Florida (6:27.7) and Florida Tech (6:35.2) rounded out the field.

“We rowed very well,” Sanderson said. “It was a good race, very close at the 1,000-meter mark. The other crews just kicked it home a little better over the last 500 meters.”

The Bucs will travel to the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Regatta in Oak Ridge, Tenn., next weekend.

“We improved on some things we’ve been working on in practice,” Sanderson said, “and we’re really looking forward to out next meet.”
