LAKELAND, Fla. – The Barry University softball team’s 35-game win streak, the fifth longest in NCAA Division II history, came to end on Sunday as the #1 Bucs (37-3, 14-1 SSC) split a Sunshine State Conference doubleheader with the Florida Southern Moccasins (25-13, 6-12 SSC). The Mocs won the first game 3-1, but Barry came back to win the series finale 1-0.

Cristina DeTagle went 4-for-6 at the plate, which included her first-career triple, to lead the Bucs offensively, while Natalie Heeley and Shyla Rider both added two hits apiece.

In the first game, the Buccaneers capitalized on a Dani Blake throwing error to take a 1-0 lead. DeTagle reached on a one-out single and after a stolen base and a Megan Young single, scored on the errant throw. After six scoreless innings, Sara Lovestrand made up for the Mocasin defensive miscue by belting a three-run walk-off homer with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to give Florida Southern the win, 3-1.

Megan Young got the starting nod for Barry, but left after walking three in one inning. Amber Jack (22-1) came in the game as a reliever in the second, but suffered the loss giving up three runs and striking out five. Florida Southern’s Brittany Minton (15-8) was the game winner allowing just one unearned run and struck out three.

The series finale started almost exactly like the doubleheader opener with the Bucs grabbing a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Rider led the game off with a triple and then scored on a Minton wild pitch to account for the lone run in the game.

Jack (23-1) responded from her first loss of the season by tossing a gem in the nightcap which resulted in a three-hit shutout victory. She finished the game without allowing a walk and five strikeouts. Minton (15-9) allowed five hits and struck out five in the Mocs’ loss. Heeley and DeTagle recorded a pair of hits in the game.

The Buccaneers will return to action on Saturday, Apr. 19 at 2 pm in the first of a three-game series with Nova Southeastern in Davie, Fla.
