LAKELAND, Fla.— The Barry University women’s tennis team was victorious in a 5-4 nail biter against #17 Florida Southern (5-1, 2-1 SSC).
In doubles competition, Caroline Wendling and Lamie Contreras faced off against #19 Senka Softic/Ashley Hungerford, defeating them 8-6 in the number one spot. Playing in the two spot, Angie Werschel and Yulia Kashelkina overpowered Erin Conroy and Veronika Kovacikova 8-1. In the three position Berit Peterson and Mei-Jing Ang lost to Nora Baertschi and Amanda Carns.

Mei-Jing Ang put the Buccaneers up 3-1 when she defeated Amanda Carns 6-2, 6-4 in the sixth spot. But the Mocs came back to take flights one and four. At the top, 17th-ranked Softic defeated Werschel 6-3, 6-1 and Kovacikova beat Contreras 6-2, 6-4 at number four.
Kashelkina broke the tie by defeating Conroy 6-3, 7-6 at number three and Caroline Wendling defeated Hungerford 7-6, 6-2 in the second spot to clinch the win.
After splitting sets at number five, with Baertschi winning 6-4 and Peterson taking the second set 6-2, Baertschi prevailed 7-5 in the third set to make the fonal 5-4.
With the win, Barry now improves to 5-1 and 3-1 in the Sunshine State Conference.
The Bucs return tomorrow in action against Florida Tech in Melbourne, Fla.
