Women's Tennis Takes Home Doubles Championship

DAYTONA BEACH—The Barry women’s tennis doubles team of Yulia Kashelkina and Mia Fiocca took home the gold flight championship on Sunday.

The Bucs Kashelkina/Fiocca duo beat the Jacksonville doubles team of Tatiana Soldatova and Eve Castaing 8-6.

Playing in the singles gold flight championship was Barry sophomore Caroline Wendling. Wendling trailed in the first set 4-1 to Florida Southern’s Senka Softic but rallied to take the first set 6-4. However, after taking the lead in the second set 1-0, Wendling retired due to dehydrations.

In singles consolation play for Barry, Fiocca won the gold flight over Rollins’ Holly Fleming 7-5, 6-2.

The Bucs next travel to Valdosta, GA to play in the ITA South Regional Tournament on Sept. 24.

To The Finals for Women's Tennis in ERAU Open

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.—The Barry University women’s tennis team had mixed results at the second day of the ERAU Open on Saturday afternoon.

In the singles blue flight, Yulia Kashelkina lost to Margret Junker 6-2, 6-1. Kashelkina will play in the blue flight consolation game tomorrow.

In the singles gold flight, Angie Werschel lost to Senka Softic 6-1, 6-2. Meanwhile, Caroline Wendling beat Eve Castaing 6-2, 6-4. Wendling advances to the blue flight championship, while Werschel will play in the gold flight consolation game.

Darina Yablonskaya lost in the consolation bracket to Bethune-Cookman’s Stacey Lopez 6-3, 7-6 (3), 10-4.

In the doubles gold flight, Kashelkina and Mia Fiocca beat the Rollins team of Junker and Kayli Ragsdale 9-8 (4) to advance to the semifinals, then beat Embry Riddle 8-7 (5) to advance to the finals tomorrow.

Also In the doubles gold flight, Werschel and Wendling lost 9-7 to the Bethune-Cookman pair (Katarina Szaboova and Eva Hankova) 9-7.

In consolation doubles, Mei-Jing Ang and Darina Yablonskaya lost to Andrea Paez and Reijina Hopkins of Bethune Cookman 8-3.

Wendling will face Softic in the gold flight singles championship at 8:30 am, while Kashelkina and Fiocca will square off against Jacksonville's Soldatova and Castaing in the blue blifght doubles championship.

Women's Tennis Embarks on Embry-Riddle Open

DAYTONA BEACH—The Barry women’s tennis team’s first action of the 2009-10 year is currently underway at the 2009 ERAU Open.

In day one action, the Bucs enjoyed much success with eight individual wins and two doubles wins.

In the Gold Flight, Barry junior Angela Werschel defeated Jacksonville’s Iva Jaresova 6-1, 6-1. Barry sophomore Caroline Wendling defeated Agnese Rozite from Florida Southern 6-4, 6-3. Freshman Mia Fiocca lost to Rollins’ Roshni Luthra 6-3, 7-6 in her first career match as a Buccaneer.

In the Blue Flight, Bucs sophomore Darina Yablonskaya lost in three sets 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. Yulia Kashelkina, Barry senior, beat Julija Stojkovska from host Embry-Riddle 6-4, 6-1.

The Eagle Flight only saw action from one Buccaneer; sophomore Mei-Jing Ang. Ang defeated Clarke Tatje from Rollins 6-3, 6-2.

The doubles team of Werschel/Wendling defeated the Bathune-Cookman combo 8-5 in the women’s doubles Gold Flight. Also in the Gold Flight, Kashelkina/Fiocca won 8-4 against Kovacikova/Arguello from Florida Southern.

The tournament continues through the weekend as Kashelkina plays in the quarterfinals at 8:30 a.m. Wendling and Werschel also play at 8:30 a.m. in the women’s singles Gold Flight with hopes of facing each other in the finals on Sunday. Ang also advanced to the quarters and plays at 10 a.m.

The Barry duo of Werschel/Wendling face the Florida Southern doubles team in the second round, Saturday at 1:30 p.m. Kashelkina/Fiocca also play second round action against the Rollins doubles team at 1:30 p.m.
