Buccaneers Bow out of Main Draw At Women's ITA Regional

VALDOSTA, Ga.--Second-seed Angie Werschel of Barry fell to fifth-seeded Natalie Gumbrecht of Valdosta State 6-3, 6-2 in the semifinals of the ITA South Region Tournament at the VSU Tennis Complex on Saturday. The loss leaves freshman Mia Fiocca the only Buccaneer still standing asshe will play in the finals of the consolation bracket on Sunday.

Werschel knocked off West Florida's Barbara Oliviera 6-1, 6-2 in the quarterfinal before falling to Gumbrecht.

Fiocca, after a first-round loss, has rolled off four straight wins to reach the consolation final. She defeated Clarke Tatje of Rollins 6-4, 6-2 in the quarterfinal and West Florida's Carmel Gray 6-4, 6-2 in the semifinal. Playing her third match of the day, she overcame a slow start in set one to win a 10-8 tiebreaker and went on to claim the consolation title with a7-6, 6-0 win over West Florida's Caitlyn Baines.

In doubles play, second-seeded Werschel and Caroline Wendling dropped their quarterfinalmatch to Lynn's Tessie Salome and Jessica Yanoff 8-3.

In the doubles consolation, Mei-Jing Ang and Darina Yablonskaya defeated West Alabama's Brittany Harris and Katy Shoptaugh 8-3, but fell in the quarterfinals to Florida Tech's Natalie Ramos and Abigail Greif 8-2. 

Werschel Advances to Quarter Finals

VALDOSTA, Ga.—Number-two seeded junior Angie Werschel advances to the quarterfinal round at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Women’s South Region Championship on Friday.

Werschel faced Margaret Junker from Rollins in the round of 32 and defeated her 6-1, 6-3. Then faced conference rival Lynn’s 10th seeded Eleonara Iannozzi and bested her in three sets, 6-3, 6-7 (5), 10-6.

Barry sophomore Caroline Wendling also beat Lynn’s Alisson Slaci 6-4, 6-3. Wendling then faced the tournament’s top seed, Senka Softic from Florida Southern, falling 6-1, 6-0.

Doubles team of Werschel and Wendling lost in quarter final action to Lynn's Tessie Salome and Jessica Yanoff 8-3.

In consolation play, Yulia Kashelkina was forced to retire after experiencing back pains. Darina Yablonskaya was defeated by Kristel de Groot from Valdosta State 1-6, 6-3.

Werschel’s quarter final match is tomorrow against West Florida’s Barbara Oliviera. Consolation play will also continue for many of the Buccaneers.
