COLUMBUS, Ga.—The second-ranked Barry Buccaneers captured their first team title of the season with a victory at Columbus State’s AFLAC/Cougar Invitational at the Green Island Country Club on Tuesday. The Bucs made up three strokes on first-round leader North Alabama with a six-under-par 278 on the second round.

Victor Billskoog fired a second-round 66 (-5) to lead the charge, but got plenty of help from his teammates. Carlos Velez shot a second-straight -1 to tie Billskoog for fourth overall (140), while Daniel Stapff and Guillermo Pumerol each shot even par. Chris Carlin, who had a 68 on the first round (his third straight sub-70 round), shot 73 on Tuesday to finish tied for sixth.

Barry (283-278—561) finished ten strokes up on North Alabama (280-291) for the team title, while Barton (286-286—572) was a stroke back in third. Valdosta State (291-284—575) and Lander (286-289—575) tied for fourth.

In a field with 13 teams in the Top-20, other than the Buccaneers, the tournament was not kind to Top-10 teams. Top-ranked Georgia College 295-284—579) finished sixth, while #4 Lynn was tied for seventh and #3 Florida Southern was tied for 10th. Newberry, ranked fifth, finished 14th, while UNC-Pembroke (8) and Carson-Newman (9) were 20th and 19th respectively.

Craig Gibson of Georgia Southwestern (72-65—137) claimed the individual medalist with a tournament-low 65 on the final round. Valdosta State’s Chelsey Gunn (71-67—138) finished second and Barton’s Thomas Muto (70-69—139) was third.

The Bucs return to action next week at the NSU Shark Invitational at PGA National in West Palm Beach, Fla.
