Men's Basketball Takes Lions in Overtime

SAINT LEO, Fla.—After one period of overtime, the Barry men’s basketball team took a 78-73 win against the Saint Leo Lions on Saturday.

Tony Dennison had a big night on both the offensive and defensive ends of the court. Dennison collected a game-high 26 points, five steals, two blocks, and three rebounds. Erick Nsangou also came up big with 20 points and four rebounds. Zack Trapp also added 16 points and three rebounds to the cause.

Off the bench, Willie Whitfield totaled nine points and a team-leading seven rebounds. Four of Whitfield’s seven rebounds came on the offensive glass. Barry’s capitalizes with 13 second chance points, 30 points in the paint and 12 points from the bench.

In the first period, the lead changed 12 times between the two team with two ties. The first half ended with the score Barry 31, and Saint Leo 34. The second half ended Barry 34, and Saint Leo 31.

With 00:27 seconds left, Barry took possession in a tie ball game and one last shot to win the game. The Buccaneers put the ball in the hands of Tony Dennison, but Dennison had the ball poked out of bounds off his leg with under 00:02 seconds left. Regulation ended in a tie at 65.

The overtime period was dominated by the Buccaneers. The Barry defense only allowed eight points from the Lions in the 5:00 minutes of play.

The win secures Barry a first-round match against Lynn on Wednesday in the SSC tournament. The game will be covered on the Buccaneer Broadcasting Network with coverage starting 30 minutes prior to tip-off.
