MELBOURNE, Fla.—The Barry University baseball team opened SSC play on Saturday afternoon with an 18-9 loss to the #17 Florida Tech Panthers at Seminick-Hall Field.
 
Florida Tech (17-4, 4-3 SSC) struck first with three runs in the first inning. By the third inning Tech had added on five more innings to take an 8-1 lead. Barry’s run in the third came when Nick Shaw singled and reached home on a Chris Leon double.
 
The Panthers packed on ten more runs before the game was over. Gus Fernandez highlights the Florida Tech offense hitting three homeruns in five at bats, earning seven RBIs.
 
The Buccaneers (10-6, 0-1 SSC) earned two homeruns of their own. Manny Pedrozo tacked on one more run in the fourth inning with solo homer to right-center. The shot was his third of the year.  In the seventh, James Young hit his first career homer, a two-run shot, driving in Harold Holness.
 
The Bucs scored seven more runs in the game, but we unable to match the offense of Tech. The Bucs had 13 hits off 37 at bats. Jonathan Cornelius took the win for the Panthers while Brad McAllister earned the loss for the Bucs. He moves to 2-3 on the season.
 
The Bucs return to action tomorrow when they take on Florida Tech in a double header that starts at 12:00 noon.
