Rowing Wraps Up Competition At Governor's Cup

DAY TWO
 
FELLSMERE, Fla.— The Barry University rowing team wrapped up competition at the Governor’s Cup on Saturday. The Bucs earned two first place finishes in the varsity 8 events, two second place finishes in the varsity 4+, and a first in the novice 4+
 
"We had good rows this weekend," head coach Dave Sanderson said. "We're happy with the results but its obvious the other crews will get faster. Yet we have the utmost respect for all the competitors on the course today."
 
The varsity 8 squad (cox- Grace Horwitz, stroke- Kelly Harrison, 7-Brielle Bowers, 6-Rebekah Evans, 5- Vanessa Viadero, 4-Jamiee Lampard, 3-Katie Rogers, 2-Summerlin Knipe, bow-Nicole Marek) competed twice, first against Dowling, then against Philadelphia University. Against Dowling, the Bucs finished first with a time of 6:57.1. Then against Philadelphia the Bucs won in a time of 6:59.7.
 
"The varsity 8 rowed three solid races this weekend," Sanderson said. "They were able to execute some things we have been working on in practice."
 
The novice 4+ team earned a win against Philadelphia. The squad (cox-Kadi Karam, stroke-Bianca Boada, 3-Elizabeth McNair, 2-Sharnel Lyttle, bow-Helene Pierre) won in a time of 8:43.0. Philadelphia finished in 8:48.4.
 
"This was a great racing experience for the novice 4," Sanderson said.
 
The varsity 4+ team (cox-Kadi Karam, stroke-Brianne Misner, 3-Consentina James, 2-Courtney Greene, bow-Michelle Geiger) raced twice. In their first event, the squad finished second in 8:38.3. Columbia B won in 8:00.1, while Dowling took third in 9:13.4. In their second race, the team took second to Philadelphia in a time of 8:40.6.
 
"We are excited about the varsity 4 as well," said Sanderson. "They had a good row on the second day and made some changes based on what they learned after the first day of racing."
 
 The Bucs return to action on Friday, March 26 at the Canal 54 Duels.
 
DAY ONE
 
FELLSMERE, Fla.—The Barry University rowing team had a good day at the Governor’s Cup on Friday afternoon; The Bucs took a first place and a second place finish on the first day of racing. The Governor’s Cup, hosted by Florida Institute of Technology, is a two-day event that features duel races for varsity and novice boats.
 
In their varsity 8 races, the Bucs faced the University of Central Oklahoma, and walked away with a win. The crew (cox- Grace Horwitz, stroke- Kelly Harrison, 7-Brielle Bowers, 6-Rebekah Evans, 5- Vanessa Viadero, 4-Jamiee Lampard, 3-Katie Rogers, 2-Summerlin Knipe, bow-Nicole Marek) finished with a time of 7:30.1. Central Oklahoma finished second with an 8:01.6
 
The varsity 4+ squad (cox-Kadi Karam, stroke-Brianne Misner, 3-Consentina James, 2-Courtney Greene, bow-Michelle Geiger) raced against two teams from the University of Central Oklahoma. The Bucs finished second with a time of 9:07.4. Central Oklahoma A won in 8:55.4, while Central Oklahoma B took third in 9:33.6.
 
“We are pleased with the team’s performance and look forward to going through the weekend racing one race at a time,” head coach Dave Sanderson said.
 
The bucs will return to the water tomorrow when both squads will race twice. In addition to the varsity squads, the novice 4+ squad will see their first action tomorrow.
