Softball Rolls Over Tritons To Open SSC Series

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers pounded out 13 hits and took advantage of four errors to knock off the Eckerd Tritons 9-5 in the opener of their Sunshine State Conference softball series at the Turley Athletic Complex on Saturday night.
 
Trailing 5-4 in the fifth inning, the Bucs (20-12, 2-2 SSC) pushed across three runs. Amanda Goelz drew a lead off walk and Cassy Zamora and Kayla Monroy dropped down bunt singles with Goelz scoring on Monroy’s to tied the game. Emma Dunlap followed with an infield single to score Zamora and Grace Collins drove in Amber Durkin, running for Dunlap.
 
The Bucs added two more insurance runs in the seventh on an error and a squeeze bunt by Collins.
 
Jessica Bevlin (4-4) worked 3.1 scoreless innings in relief of starter Paula Mackin. She gave up three hits and a walk and struck out three.
 
Mackenzie Dawson (5-9) took the loss for the Tritons (9-17-1, 1-3 SSC).  She went the distance, allowing nine runs (three earned) on 13 hits and a walk, while striking out three.
 
Collins and Taylor Newman each had three hits for the Bucs, with Collins driving in three and Newman scoring three. Goelz, Zamora and Monroy all had two hits.
 
The Sunday doubleheader, scheduled to start at 1:00 pm, has been moved up to 9:00 am due to threat of rain in St. Petersburg in the afternoon.
