LAKELAND, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers split a Sunshine State Conference softball doubleheader at Barnett Field in Lakeland, Fla., against the Florida Southern Moccasins winning 1-0, but losing 4-3.

In the first game, Paula Mackin (11-6) tossed a three-hit shutout to lead the Bucs (25-15, 7-5 SSC) to the 1-0 win. She walked three, hit a batter and struck out four to snap a person five-game losing streak.

The Bucs plated the only run in the fifth inning. Amanda Goelz reached on an error by Mocs’ second baseman Peggy Alex and gave way on the bases to pinch runner Julia Chongarlides. Kayla Monroy dropped down a sacrifice bunt, but the Mocs, who made a try at second for Chongarlides, came up empty on outs. Sara Hipson, pinch hitting for Taylor Newman, drove a single up the middle to score Chongarlides with the game’s only run.

In the second game, the Bucs led 1-0 and 2-1 before the Mocs (20-17, 6-9 SSC) scored three runs in the third and fourth innings. With the game tied 2-2 in the fourth, the Mocs had runners at second and third with two outs when Lindsey Powell hit a little dribbler to Jessica Tabor at  first base and the ball squirted away allowing both runs to score.

Tabor, who had a single, double earlier in the game, tripled to lead off the seventh. Brianna Smith followed with a line shot into right field that Powell caught off her shoe tops for a sacrifice fly to score Tabor and trim the lead to 4-3, but that was as close as the Bucs would get.

Smith (9-4) took the loss, despite not giving up an earned run in 3.2 innings. She allowed four uneared runs on five hits and four walks, while striking out four. Jessica Bevlin scattered four hits in 2.1 innings in relief.

Christine Clark (7-8) earned the win, despite allowing 11 hits in the complete game. She held the Bucs to three runs (two earned) by not issuing a walk and striking out three.

The Bucs play a pair in West Palm Beach, Fla., on Tuesday, Apr. 6 against the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish, starting at 5:30 pm.
