DAVIE, Fla.—The Barry men’s soccer team willed their way to a 1-0 win over the Nova Southeastern Sharks in their first game of Sunshine State Conference play on Saturday.

After almost 73:00 minutes of scoreless soccer, Sascha Koettig directed a beautiful cross from Andres Perez off the Nova keeper and into the back of the net. Perez took a pass from Guilherme Oliveira and worked his way to the Nova touchline. The service found Koettig in traffic and Koettig capitalized on one of the few Buccaneer scoring opportunities. The goal gives Koettig a team leading 12 points.

In the first half, Barry only posted two shots on goal, greatly due to the impressive Sharks’ defense. However, the Buccaneer defense was equally impressive, only allowing one shot on goal in the first period.

One Buccaneer opportunity came in the first period when Mark Anderson lined up a free kick from 25 yards out. Anderson’s blast ricochet off the inside portion of the post then Godfrey François’ volley off the rebound was sent high.

A rejuvenated Barry squad took the field for the second half and took control of the game. Barry dominated possession in the second period and totaled 15 shots to Nova’s eight on the night. The Bucs more than doubled the Sharks’ shots on goal total with five.

Barry hits the road at the end of the week for a match up against regional opponent Lambuth on Friday, Sept. 24 at 1:00 p.m. in Jackson, Tenn. Coverage on the Buccaneer Broadcasting Network can be heard starting at 12:30 p.m. with live commentary throughout the match.
