FELLSMERE, Fla.—The Barry University rowing team wrapped up competition at the Governor’s Cup on Saturday afternoon. Both the varsity 4 and varsity 8 crews rowed twice, each taking a win and a loss.

“Overall it was a positive weekend,” head coach Dave Sanderson said. “The team has shown a lot of improvement from a month ago, but we still have some work to do.”

In the varsity 4’s first race of the day, the Bucs lost by a slim margin to Philadelphia. The Bucs posted a time of 8:51.5, just three seconds behind the Rams. The boat was manned by cox- Chileshe Chanfu, stroke- Jessica McKinney, 3- Jen Feriozzi, 2-Jamie Gordan, bow-Rebekah Kilroy.

In their second event of the day, the Bucs varsity 4 crew earned a win against Jacksonville in a time of 8:17.8. Manning the boat in the second race was cox- Savanna Luberto, stroke Haley Stark, 3- Feriozzi, 2-Gordan, bow-Kilroy.

“The varsity 4 raced hard the whole way but came up a little short in their first race,” said Sanderson. “They had a great result in the second race of the day though.”

“The varsity 4 group showed improvement throughout the weekend,” assistant coach Nick Goode added. “They pulled together for the last race of the day and all contributed to that boat’s win.”

Like the varsity 4 racers, the varsity 8 crew split races on Saturday. The Bucs took a win over Philadelphia, but fell to Jacksonville.

Against Philadelphia, the team (cox. Grace Horwitz, stroke- Kelly Harrison, 7- Vanessa Viadero, 6- Jaimee Lampard, 5- Nicole Marek, 4- Helene Pierre, 3- Renee Forcier, 2- Courtney Greene, bow- Arianna Masley) finished in 7:06.6, 12.6 seconds ahead of the Rams. In their later race, however, the Bucs finished in a time of 7:09.1, nearly 12 seconds behind Jacksonville.

“We had a good race this morning and built on last night’s success,” said Sanderson. It was disappointing to lose to Jacksonville in the second race of the day, but it shows we have room for improvement.”

The Bucs are back in action next weekend on the same course in the Canal 54 Duals.
