MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers dropped the opener of their Sunshine State Conference softball series 8-5 to the Florida Southern Moccasins Friday night at Buccaneer Field.
 
The Mocs (15-11, 6-4 SSC) jumped out to a 5-0 lead after three innings thanks to a pair of home runs by Brittany Martin. They added three more runs in the fourth on three Buccaneer errors.
 
The Bucs’ (23-7, 9-1 SSC) offense came from two homers, a solo shot from Alyssa Goldsmith in the second and a grand slam by Brooke Asher in the seventh.
 
Christine Clark (12-5) went the distance for the Mocs to earn the win. She allowed five runs (one earned) on 10 hits and a walk and struck out six. Brianna Smith (11-5) was tagged with the loss for the Bucs. She worked six innings and allowed eight runs (five earned) on nine hits and three walks, while striking out eight. Jessica Bevlin worked a scoreless seventh.
 
The series concludes with a doubleheader on Saturday at 1:00 pm.
