Women's Golf Takes Top Spot At Marjorie Whitney Invitational

PONTE VERDE, Fla.— The Barry University women’s golf team opened their fall season with a win at the Marjorie Whitney Invitational. The Bucs led after the first round with a 320 and fired a 310 in the second round for a combined 630.

SSC foe Saint Leo finished seven strokes behind the Bucs for second place with a 637 (320-317). Seminole State Community College posted a 645 (328-317) to tie for third with Ashland University (332-313). West Florida rounded out the top five with a 675 (341-334) for fifth place.

Nancy Vergara led the way for Barry in her first collegiate tournament. Vergara posted a 152 (74-78) to finish tied for second place overall.

Taylor Babcock finished alone in fifth place with a 155 (80-74) while Lizzi Over was a stroke behind her with a 156 (79-77) in sixth place.

Francesca Perini shot a 167 (87-80) to finish tied for 21st while Anne Foudraine rounded out the Buccaneer five with a 168 (88-80).

The win is the second career top-finish for second-year coach Gina Umeck and the Buccaneer’s first at the Marjorie Whitney, formally named the Queens of Charlotte Invitational.

DAY ONE RESULTS

PONTE VERDE, Fla.—The Barry University women’s golf team competed in the first round of the Marjorie Whitney Invitational tournament this afternoon. After the first round of play, the Bucs are tied for first place overall with the Saint Leo Lions with a 320.

Following the Bucs and Lions, Seminole State is in third with a 328. Host Queens University is in fourth with a 331 while Ashland University rounded out the top five with a 332.

Nancy Vergara led the way for Barry in the first round. Vergara fired a 74 (38-36) to finish tied for second overall. Following Vergara, Lizzi Over shot a 79 (40-39) for sixth place after the first round. Taylor Babcock was a stroke off Over with an 80 (42-38). She is tied for seventh.

Fransecsa Perini finished the first round tied for 26th place with an 87 (42-45) while Anne Fourdraine rounded out the Buccaneer players with an 88 (44-44). She is tied for 31st place overall.

The tournament, formally known as the Queens Invitational was renamed after Marjorie Whitney, a member of the 2009 Queens University women’s golf team. Whitney passed away in a car accident over Christmas break last year. The tournament name was changed in honor of her life.

The teams return to action tomorrow for the second round.
