MIAMI SHORES Fla.—The Barry University men’s soccer team stepped out of conference play and defeated the Lions of Florida Memorial University 1-0 in a game shortened by weather.

The game was a struggle from the start, as the Bucs dominated the pace but  the Lions would make their presence felt by imposing their physical play throughout the match. In the first half alone, the Lions were penalized with 14 fouls including a pair of yellow cards to Jahvan Russel as well as Leonardo Ibanez. Following his yellow card, Ibanez blatantly shoved Barry’s Mark Anderson and was immediately red-carded and ejected from the game at the 29th minute mark.

After playing with the man advantage for a mere 15 minutes, the Buccaneer’s Matthieu Stabielli was also red-carded and ejected from the match with 24 seconds remaining in the half. Both teams would play the remainder of the game a man down and would head into the intermission with a scoreless tie.

Early in the second half, the Bucs continued to establish their presence offensively creating scoring opportunities.

It wasn’t until Mark Anderson was able to slip a pass behind the Lions defense to freshman Connor Randel, who made a move on the goalkeeper and finished the breakaway for his third goal of the season.

As play neared the 73rd minute mark, lightning was detected in the area and the game came to a halt. Randel’s goal would be the game winner lifting the Bucs to their tenth win on the season.

Johnny Rodrigues improved his overall record to 10-1-3 on the season and recorded his third consecutive shutout. The Bucs will travel to Lakeland on Saturday where they will face off against the Mocs of Florida Southern University.

Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. with live-Stat and audio broadcast will be available through the Barry University athletic website, GOBARRYBUCS.COM.
