Women's Basketball Ices Bears In Overtime For First Win

MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers built a big lead, only to see it evaporate, and hang on to win in overtime as they defeated the Concordia-St. Paul Bears 81-79 in the Health & Sports Center Friday night.

The Bucs (1-2) led by eight, 72-64, after a fast-break layup by Yvonne Houston with 2:09 to play. But the Bears (2-1) rolled an 11-3 run to close the half, tying the game at 75-75 on a three-pointer by Jolene Blood with 0:02.2 seconds left.

In the overtime period, the Bears were just one for seven from the field as the Bucs built an 81-76 lead and held on for the 81-79 win.

In the first half, the Bucs jumped out to a 19-9 lead after the first 10 minutes after a Danielle DeBerry three-pointer at 9:42 and carried a nine-point lead into the break at 33-24.

Shanna Suttington led the Bucs with 21 points, while DeBerry added 17 and Houston had 12. Alexandria Zamora just missed a double-double with nine points and 14 rebounds. Anika Whiting had 27 points to lead the Bears, while Tierra Bender added 14 points, all in the second half.

The Bucs travel to Golden, Colo., for the Regis Thanksgiving Classic, taking on the Rangers and Colorado-Mines.
