FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla.—The Barry University women’s basketball (3-3, 1-0 SSC) team defeated the Nova Southeastern Sharks 60-58 on a last-second layup by Danielle DeBerry that put the Bucs ahead with just .5 seconds remaining.

The Bucs opened the first half playing staggering defense forcing the Sharks into difficult shots late in the shot clock, which would then turn into easy buckets on the offensive end.

DeBerry, who scored five early points including a free throw on a three point play to cap-off a 13-6 run to begin the game, led the Buccaneers in the first half.

The Bucs defense continued throughout the period holding the Sharks to 32 percent shooting from the field including 1-11 from beyond the arc. However, some 10 first half turnovers would keep the Bucs from extending the lead and they would go into the intermission up just 32-23.

The Sharks came out on a 13-4 run to start the second half and led by as many as five throughout the period, however the Bucs were resilient and refused to go away.

With under 30 seconds remaining in the game, the Sharks maintained possession with the score knotted up at 58-58. Nova chose not to run the clock down in order to get the last shot of the game and the Bucs would get a key defensive stop with 12 seconds remaining on a missed three-point attempt.

After a timeout, DeBerry found herself isolated with her defender. She drove to her right and connected on a runner with less than a second on the clock to lift the Buccaneers.

Alexandria Zamora came up big on the afternoon with an 11-point, 14-rebound performance. Yvonne Houston finished 10-15 from the field including 2-3 from deep for a game-high 23 points. Jackie Perez was a spark for the Buccaneers off the bench with five points and three crucial rebounds.

Pacing the Sharks was Jessica Russi with 14 points. Jasmine Wilkins finished with a double-double, adding 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Sharks.

Next the women will travel to West Palm Beach where they will face Palm Beach Atlantic on Dec. 7.

Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. with live stat and audio broadcast available through the Barry University website, GOBARRYBUCS.COM.
