SAVANNAH, Ga. -- Not exactly what the doctor ordered, but he'll take it, nonetheless.
Barry University men's tennis team won its second match of the weekend in Georgia at Armstrong Atlantic State's three-day tri-match setup. The Buccaneers, ranked No. 2 in the nation, beat No. 12 Augusta State (Ga.) 5-2 in a match that didn't complete all of its matches due to Barry's flight schedule.
"It was (a) productive (trip), but a little bit disappointing because of the rainout after we were well into the match with Armstrong Atlantic," Buccaneers coach Dr. George Samuel said. "I wanted to finish it because I wanted to see where we were. It was a good day because we were hitting on all cylinders."
A two-hour delay Sunday morning with temperatures dropping to 42 degrees pushed the start time of the Augusta State match back to conclude the three-day trip. Barry's match with No. 3 Armstrong Atlantic went unfinished due to storms. It will not be completed.
"I was hoping for a quicker winning result," Samuel said. "But a win is a win, no matter how you get it."
Barry (10-1) won the Nos. 2 and 3 doubles matches by identical 8-4 scores. Marco Mokrzycki and Leo Vivas claimed the No. 2 flight match, and Romain Costamagna and Ollie Lemaitre won the No. 3 pairs match.
Fabian Groetsch beat Henrique Boturao, 6-2, 7-5 (7-5) at No. 2 singles. Augusta State's Jan Labas beat Costamagna, 7-6, (7-4), 7-5 in match that had all the elements of swinging both ways.
Lemaitre picked up Barry's second singles match win with a three-set comeback win over Victor Guimaraes, 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-0 at No. 5. Vivas rolled to a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 6 over Jenner Stevenson.
"I think Leo's playing better in each match in both singles and doubles," Samuel said. "Leo, overall, has been getting better and better, and more consistent. And I think more importantly, he's getting more confidence."
Mokrzycki's match with Bernardo Fernandez went unfinished with the Bucs' top player leading 3-1 in the third set, following two wire-to-wire first sets. Daniel Schmidt, recently reinserted into the lineup, was leading 3-1 in the third set as well when his No. 3 singles match was halted with Victor Cabellos.
"I thought that we looked a little bit sluggish on the court today, maybe from the sitting around," Samuel said. "I just didn't feel we came out ready to go. We started out kind of lukewarm, and we had to slash and peck through the matches.
"Daniel, I think he's a little bit rusty. He's got to play a few more matches before he starts to play his best tennis."
Mokrzycki and Vivas beat Cabellos and Guimaraes in their No. 2 doubles match. No. 20 ranked Fernandez and Boturao, ranked 20th in the country as a doubles team, beat Groetsch and Schmidt at the No. 1 spot. Lemaitre and Costamagna got past Stevenson and Maxime Coulomb.
"We've got to play really good on all days to be able to win championships," Samuel said.
Barry will play NCAA Division I Georgetown in an exhibition match Monday in Miami Shores.
