MIAMI SHORES, Fla.--The Buccaneers found themselves with their backs against the wall, in just their first conference action of the season and they proved to be a resilient bunch. This spring Barry entered with high expectations coming off a tremendous 2011 campaign where they claimed their second SSC title in three years, but following a few early struggles, the Bucs fell four games under .500. They have since turned that pressure into motivation and are now just one game away from reaching the .500 mark and moved to 1-0 in SSC play.
This could be the win the Bucs have been searching for: a come-from-behind win against Eckerd to get the season rolling again.
Barry (7-8, 1-0) trailed 4-0 after giving up three runs in the top of the fourth and another in the fifth thanks to some defensive miscues by the Bucs and timely hitting by the Tritons (11-6, 0-1).
In the bottom of the seventh the Bucs answered with a four run outburst, scoring all four runs with two outs and it was capped off by an RBI single to left off the bat of Adrian English to drive in Luis Arrizurieta.
However, Eckerd answered with a four run inning of their own in the top of the eighth, knocking the Buccaneer starter Brad McAllister who scattered seven runs (4 earned) in seven and a third innings of work.
After getting one back in the eighth, Barry entered the final inning trailing 9-6. Arrizurieta was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame followed by a single to center by Sheehan Planas. Julio Ramos, who entered the game for the injured Adrian English, drove in Arrizurieta on a grounder to shortstop to cut the deficit to two. After Tim Blackmon walked, Bryant Elliot and Sam Halpern followed with RBI singles to knot the score at eight.
Then with the game tied and two outs, Harold Holness delivered a game walk-off single to right field, lifting the Bucs over Eckerd in dramatic fashion.
Tyler Pestch pitched a scoreless inning in relief and earned his first victory of the year.
The Bucs who have now won three straight, were led offensively by Planas and Holness who each had three hits on the night.
Barry will finish the three game set versus Eckered with a double header Saturday beginning at 12:00 p.m.
