PENSACOLA, Fla. -- Barry University women's tennis players moved on at the ITA South Region Championships Saturday at the University of West Florida.
Eighth-seeded Emma Onila defeated Rollins' Johanna Olson, 6-1, 6-1, Saturday morning in the Round of 16. Karina Goia was a 6-7, 6-3, 10-5 comeback winner over Florida Southern's third-seeded Magda Riutort to send her on to the quarterfinals, along with Onila and seventh-seeded Elisabeth Abanda. Abanda defeated West Florida's Nina Bubelova, 6-2, 5-7, 10-7.
Barry's Linda Fritschken lost her Round of 16 match against Lynn's fourth-seeded Ioana Ivan, 6-0, 6-3.
In the quarterfinals, Onila defeated Florida Tech's top-seeded Kristina Huba, 7-5, 2-6, 10-4, to advance to Sunday's semifinals. Goia defeated Lynn's Andrea Berkova, 6-3, 6-1, to move on to the semis. Abanda lost to Lynn's second-seeded Val Confaloneiri, 6-4, 3-6, 10-6, in another battle.
Onila will face Ivan in Sunday's 10 a.m. semifinals. Goia meets Confalonieri in the other semi.
In the doubles quarterfinals, fourth-seeded Abanda and Goia defeated Saint Leo's Anastasia Wagner and Paula Montoya, 8-5, to move on to Sunday's 1 p.m. semifinals, where the Buccaneers pair will meet Lynn's top-seeded duo of Ivan and Confaloneiri.
In the other quarterfinal pairs match, Barry's second-seeded Onila and Fritschken were easy 8-1 winners over Tampa's Meg Wladimirski and Lauren Hewett. Onila and Fritschken will play Florida Southern's third-seeded Sabine Goge and Riutort in Sunday's other 1 p.m. semifinal.
