MIAMI, Fla. – Barry University women’s tennis player Karina Goia will play for the Florida International Panther Invitational singles title for a second straight year.
In the B Bracket, Barry’s Karina Goia rolled past FIU’s Kaitlin Brozovich, 6-1, 6-1, in the quarterfinals. She also defeated FGCU’s Elizabeth Means, 2-6, 7-5, 6-3, in the semis to reach Sunday’s 9 a.m. finals.
Goia won the top flight title last year.
In the A Bracket, Barry’s Sonja Larsen won her quarterfinals match with FIU’s Nerma Caluk, 6-2, 6-3. Larsen fell in the semifinals. Larsen will play Florida Gulf Coast’s Breana Stampfli for third place at 9 a.m. Sunday.
Barry’s Elisabeth Abanda beat NSU’s Linda Komienko in the B quarterfinals. Abanda fell, 7-5, 7-6 (8-6), to FIU’s Nina Nagode in the semis. Abanda will play Elizabeth Means for third place 9 a.m. Sunday.
Barry’s Linda Fritschken lost to FIU’s Carlotta Orlando, 6-3, 7-5, in the A Draw quarters. Bucs teammate Emma Onila retired in the first set of her quarterfinals match with Nova Southeastern’s Francesca Sella. Barry’s Ana Pain defaulted to Nagode in the B quarters.
Barry’s Jasi Witherspoon lost to Nova’s Bianca Roberts, 6-1, 6-4, in the C Draw. Barry’s Kimmy Twelker defaulted to Eastern Michigan’s Maria Paula Ribero in the B Draw consolation bracket.
In doubles play, Onila and Fritschken lost to FIU’s Yana Koroleva and Caluk, 8-4, in the championship match. Abanda and Ana Pain defeated Nova’s Carlee Rizzolo and Sella, 8-1, in the third place match.
