(MIAMI, FL) Dr. Maria Teahan, a creative and passionate educator with a depth of clinical experience, will lead the Ellen Whiteside McDonnell School of Social Work at Barry University as Interim Dean, effective July 1, 2021.

Dr. Teahan’s expertise ranges from child and family practice to hospice care, grief and traumatic loss counseling, and critical incident stress management. A triple alumna of Barry University, she has served as Associate Dean since 2017.

“Our Barry University students have long been the beneficiary of Dr. Teahan’s skill, creativity and dedication,” said Dr. John Murray, Provost of Barry University. “We are grateful she has accepted this interim leadership role and I am confident she will carry on the tradition of excellence in the School of Social Work.”

Dr. Teahan earned a Bachelor of Social Work, a Master of Social Work and a PhD in Social Work, all from Barry University.

“At Barry we proudly train and empower the next generation of professional clinicians and leaders in the field of Social Work who are grounded in our commitments to inclusivity, social justice, and collaborative service,” Dr. Teahan said. “It is an honor to take on this expanded role at the institution.”

Dr. Teahan will replace Dr. Phyllis Scott, who is retiring as Dean at the end of this month.
