Mark your calendar! You won’t want to miss this Instagram Live event featuring highly esteemed Barry alumnus, Captain Jean-Pierre DeBarros. Join hosts Olivia Klein and Dr. Dale Hartz as they speak to Captain Debarros about navigating the different professional opportunities available within the federal government. Captain DeBarros is a commissioned officer currently assigned with the Department of Homeland Security’s I.C.E. Health Service Corp in Miami, Florida. He’s served in several positions of government, and has earned awards for his accomplishments in the field of health care administration from the American Academy of Medical Administrators and the U.S. Public Health Service. 

Captain DeBarros has an impressive and diverse professional career. Prior to his current position, he served as Senior Health Advisor for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services; before that, he was responsible for the grant management of multiple U.S. states in developing and solidifying their state-wide emergency and preparedness plans and operations. In another role, Captain DeBarros collaborated with other U.S. government agencies to develop worldwide policies and guidelines for post-conflict recovery reconstruction, stabilization, and conflict-prevention efforts in fragile or failing states. In particular, he’s done extensive work in the Democratic Republic of Congo on matters related to sexual- and gender-based violence. Before his time in health care administration, he spent eight years in the field of cardiac rehabilitation and physical therapy for patients recovering from stroke, work-related injuries, spinal cord injuries, or affliction from Parkinson’s Disease. 

In 1996, Captain DeBarros earned his Master’s degree in Health Care Administration from Barry University. He joined the U.S. Air Force shortly thereafter, where he spent six years of his military career as a Medical Services Corps officer at Andrews Air Force Base and the Office of the Air Force Surgeon General. Currently he serves on the Barry University Alumni Board of Directors, and he’s highly engaged with the local academic community, frequently speaking to students on matters related to the field of healthcare and professional development.
