Single stream recycling kicks off at Barry University today

Barry University is introducing single stream recycling on campus Wednesday, Oct. 1 becoming the first campus in South Florida to do so.

The new technology will make it easier for Barry students, faculty and staff to recycle by placing all their recyclable items – paper, plastic, aluminum – in a single container for collection and processing. When used in communities, the method has been shown to increase the amount of recycled goods by 30 percent, also benefiting the environment by cutting down on the number of collection vehicles on the road.

Students, faculty and staff will be able to collect recyclables in their rooms and offices, which will then be delivered to designated collection points on campus.

The technology is being introduced in collaboration with Waste Management, which has introduced similar technology in communities throughout South Florida. Barry is the first university in the region, however, to utilize single stream recycling on campus.

Single stream recycling officially kicks off at Barry Wednesday, Oct. 1 and is the most recent in a string of environmentally-friendly initiatives:
  • In August, Sodexo Dining Services installed new kitchen exhaust hoods for university dining services, estimated to conserve more than $14,000 in energy costs this year.
  • Throughout the spring 2008 semester, Sodexo Dining Services also eliminated more than 25 percent of food waste on campus through a “going trayless” initiative encouraging students not to “eat with their eyes.”
  • Facilities Management will be hosting a “green” open house next Friday, Oct. 10 with information on how to install more energy efficient lighting, reducing office paper waste and hosting environmentally-friendly events.
  • On Oct. 28, Barry University, in collaboration the Center for Earth Jurisprudence, will be hosting the first-time global warming conference. The conference will feature Bill McKibben, author of acclaimed novel “The End of Nature,” which is this year’s common-reader for first-year Barry students.
