Orlando, Fla. – Strong performances by the Barry University School of Law moot court and trial teams recently produced impressive finishes in the sweet 16 and elite eight at two separate national competitions.
Less than two weeks after being crowned champions at the Puerto Rico Trial Advocacy Competition – its second national championship this year after winning the ABA National Criminal Trial Advocacy Competition in March – Barry’s trial team finished in the elite eight at the fifth annual Buffalo Niagara Mock Trial Competition in Buffalo, New York. The invitation only tournament, which took place Nov. 7-9 and was sponsored by the University of Buffalo Law School, featured 30 trial teams from across the country.
Barry’s team consisted of Ben Smith, Natalie Kato, Margaret Garner and Danielle Barbato; the team was coached by Mike Kraynick and John Beamer. In addition to the strong finish, Smith received the Best Direct Examination award. The trial team’s only defeat in the final round came from Duquesne University School of Law, the eventual champion of the competition.
Barry’s trial team was pitted against some of the best law school trial teams in the country, making its finish in the elite eight even more impressive. Schools that competed include: John Marshall, Michigan State, Nova Southeastern, Catholic University, American University, University of North Carolina, Florida Coastal and Georgia State.
Barry’s moot court team made its presence known Nov. 13-15 by finishing in the sweet 16 at the 27th annual Chicago Bar Association Moot Court Competition. Coached by Professor Elizabeth Megale, Barry’s team of Kerry Adams and Xavier Carerra competed against more than 30 other moot court teams from across the country. Adams and Carerra whizzed through the three preliminary rounds, beating out approximately half the competition, before being defeated by John Marshall Law School.
This was the third impressive finish for Barry’s moot court team this year. In March, the moot court team finished second at the 2008 Domenick L. Gabrielli National Family Law Moot Court Competition, and later that month two Barry moot court teams finished in the sweet 16 of the regional tournament at the American Bar Association National Competition, which is one of the most prestigious in the country.
“We are very proud that our competition teams continue to achieve great success at tournaments across the country,” said Barry Law School Dean Leticia Diaz. “These students and coaches represent the very best of Barry Law School, and epitomize the Barry mission through their dedication to academic excellence, which is demonstrated by these recent accomplishments."
