What is National Black Catholic History Month?

The month of November is often associated with Thanksgiving. However, November is also significant for many Black Catholics. November is National Black Catholic History Month (NBCHM). During this month, men and women from Africa who have pioneered the faith are honored and celebrated via various ceremonies and events. It is essential to celebrate and raise awareness about Christianity's origins, as many people do not know that Christianity did not start in Europe.

NBCHM has been celebrated since 1990 when the National Black Catholic Clergy Caucus of the United States instigated it. November was chosen since it holds special days for two prominent African Catholics: St. Augustine, whose birthday is on November 13, and St. Martin de Porres, whose feast day is celebrated on November 3.

Please join Barry University’s College of Arts and Sciences and Africana Studies Program as we honor and celebrate NBCHM.
