Students Participate in Federal Work-Study Community Service

A total of 63 students participated in the Federal Work-Study (FWS) Community Service Program during the 2015–2016 academic year. Eighteen of them played civic leadership roles as Barry Service Corps (BSC) fellows.

The students served mainly as tutors, program assistants, and community service trip leaders, Program Coordinator Valerie Scott reported recently.

They were assigned to various community agencies, with nine of them serving as tutors with Breakthrough Miami and five with Little Haiti Optimist Club. Others serving as tutors were placed at Doctors Charter School, Florida International Academy, Gratigny Elementary, Hubert O. Sibley K–8 Academy, and W.J. BryanElementary School.

Twelve students were given community-based program assistant roles. They served at Camillus House, Chapman Partnership, Easter Seals South Florida, E-SToPP: Eradicating the School-to-Prison Pipeline, Miami Dade County Foster and Adoptive Parent Association (FAPA), Mount TaborMissionary BaptistChurch, and Special Olympics Florida.

Three students were activity assistants in the Miami Shores Village Recreation Department, and one student supported the Gang Alternative program as an office assistant.

All students participating in FWS Community Service are automatically enrolled in the Barry Service Corps (BSC). Those selected as BSC fellows take part in a yearlong civic learning and leadership initiative. Last academic year, they supported the work of community partners addressing urban health, youth development, and other social issues.

BSC fellows also assisted the Center for Community Service Initiatives (CCSI) as community service trip leaders and reflection facilitators. Some fellows helped to organize a fall break trip to Immokalee and Alternative Spring Break trips to New Orleans and Haiti.

The CCSI manages FWS Community Service in collaboration with the Office of Financial Aid and the Division of Human Resources.

Barry Volunteers Perform Surgeries During Medical Mission Trip to Guyana

A group of volunteers from Barry University’s College of Nursing and Health Sciences and School of Podiatric Medicine recently joined Dr. Eric J. Stelnicki and his father, Barry trustee Dr. James Stelnicki, on a medical mission trip to Georgetown, Guyana.

During the weeklong trip to the South American country, the team saw more than 100 patients and the doctors performed 35 surgeries. One case involved a woman who had an injured foot and was not able to stand for three years. The doctors performed surgery on her foot so she would be able to walk again.

In addition, the volunteers provided medical and nursing education.

The trip was funded in part by Children’s Health and Rehabilitative Missions (CHARM), a non-profit organization established by Dr. Eric J. Stelnicki, a Fort Lauderdale-based pediatric plastic and reconstructive surgeon.

Staff Members Invited to Participate in Community Service

The Center for Community Service Initiatives (CCSI) is inviting staff members to join students and faculty on the major days of service planned for the 2016–2017 academic year.

The major days of service on the CCSI calendar are the September 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance; International Coastal Cleanup Day, September 17; Make a Difference Day, October 22; and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service, January 14.

“The days of service provide opportunities for staff members to serve alongside their faculty colleagues and students,” said Dr. Glenn Bowen, director of the Center for Community Service Initiatives (CCSI). “These are opportunities for all of us to further the university’s commitment to social justice through collaborative service that benefits disadvantaged communities.”

- The September 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance honors the victims, survivors, and families of 9/11 through service-oriented programs. According to the Corporation for National and Community Service, this day of service “has come to symbolize the culmination of our nation’s enduring unity, engaging millions of volunteers and communities each year.”

Barry’s service activities will take place on Saturday, September 10, the day preceding the 15th anniversary of the terrorist attacks.

- International Coastal Cleanup is described as “the world’s largest volunteer effort to clean up waterways and the ocean.” Ocean Conservancy sponsors the cleanup project in partnership with volunteer organizations and individuals around the world.

Currently celebrating its 30th anniversary, Ocean Conservancy reported that nearly 800,000 volunteers collected more than 18 million pounds of trash during the 2015 cleanup.

- Make a Difference Day is observed on the fourth Saturday of October. USA Weekend magazine created the event in 1992 as “a celebration of neighbors helping neighbors.”

According to Points of Light, a sponsor, “Make A Difference Day is a day to celebrate the power of people to make a difference.”

- Barry marks the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service on the Saturday preceding the King Holiday, the third Monday of January.

MLK Day provides “a way to transform Dr. King’s life and teachings into community service that helps empower and strengthen local communities,” according to the Corporation National and Community Service.

In addition, Freshman Experience Day, August 20, will feature community service projects.
