Call for Community Engagement Award Nominations

The second annual Community Engagement Awards Ceremony will be held on Thursday, March 26, and the CCSI is accepting nominations.

Community Engagement Educator is among the seven categories of awards.

The Community Engagement Educator Award honors an employee for significant contributions to the institutionalization of community engagement at BarryUniversity. The winner of this award will be an administrator, staff member, or faculty member who has promoted institutional commitment to community engagement, contributed to campus–community partnerships, and supported students and colleagues in community engagement activities.

During the inaugural year, the Community Engagement Educator Award went to Dr. Philip Mann, director of community economic development in the D. Inez Andreas School of Business.

The deadline to submit nominations/applications for the Community Engagement Awards is Friday, January 30.

Additional information is available in the Community Engagement Management System (CEMS), via the CCSI homepage.

Faculty Invited to Apply for Service-Learning Fellowships

The Center for Community Service Initiatives (CCSI) invites faculty members to apply for service-learning fellowships by the January 30 deadline.

Two fellowships will be available for the 2015–2016 academic year. Through the fellowships, successful applicants participate in a yearlong faculty development program focused on service-learning pedagogy, practice, and associated scholarship. Each service-learning fellow gets a course release to serve as a workshop coordinator/instructor, faculty mentor, and engaged scholar.

Florida Campus Compact Holds Regional Meeting at Barry

Florida Campus Compact member institutions in South Florida gathered on Barry’s main campus in Miami Shores recently for a regional meeting. Barry and St. Thomas University co-hosted the meeting.

University President Sister Linda Bevilacqua, OP, PhD welcomed the representatives of South Florida colleges and universities that are members of the statewide organization.

“Thank you for inspiring, mentoring, and guiding our students,” Sister Linda told the group. “Thank you for giving them the passion to be of service – to share their gifts and talents.”

Collaborative service is embedded in Barry’s mission, Sister Linda said. And she mentioned the “Learn, Reflect, Serve” motto displayed prominently on campus.

CCSI Director Dr. Glenn Bowen made a special presentation on Assessment of Community Engagement Programs and Projects.

Earlier, students Keiara Greene-Williams and Gilberte Jean-Francois joined CCSI Associate Director Courtney Berrien for a presentation on the work of the Barry Service Corps (BSC). Greene-Williams and Jean-Francois are BSC leaders.

Anthony Vinciguerra, director of St. Thomas University’s Center for Community Engagement, made a presentation focusing on university projects in Haiti.
