Community Engagement Fair Set for Next Wednesday

The fall Community Engagement Fair will be held next Wednesday, September 10. More than 25 community partners have registered for the event.

After participating in a workshop on Barry’s Quality Enhancement Plan, or QEP, the community partners will set up tables with documents and displays featuring the programs and services offered by their agencies.

Students, faculty, and staff are invited to meet community partners and discuss opportunities for volunteer work, service-learning, community-based research, and internships. This segment of the fair will take place in the Andreas Courtyard from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Community partners registered for the fair include Chapman Partnership, EcoTech Visions, Feeding South Florida, Heartland Hospice, Junior Achievement of Miami, Miami-Dade Foster & Adoptive Parent Association, Neighborhood Housing Services of South Florida, TECHO, UrbanPromise Miami, and the Women's Breast Health Initiative - Florida Affliliate.

The Center for Community Service Initiatives (CCSI) organizes the biannual fair as a major community engagement event on Barry’s main campus.

Additional information is available from the CCSI at service@barry.edu or 305-899-3696.

Forum to Focus on College Access and Rising Tuition

The first forum in the Deliberative Dialogue Series for the 2014-2015 academic year will be held on September 23, from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m., in the Andreas Building, Room 111.

The topic of the forum is “College Access and Rising Tuition.”

Miami-Dade County Public Schools Thanks University

The Education Transformation Office (ETO) of Miami-Dade County Public Schools has thanked Barry University for services rendered as part of Freshmen Experience Day.

Incoming students assisted in cleaning up several schools in preparation for the new academic year.

In an e-mail to the CCSI last week, ETO Administrative Director Michael A. Lewis said the feedback from the school principals was "very positive." He added: "I look forward to future collaborations."

The community service project for Freshmen Experience Day was coordinated by the CCSI in collaboration with the Center for Student Involvement in the Division of Student Affairs.

CEMS Provides Community Engagement Information

A variety of community engagement information is available in CEMS, the Community Engagement Management System. The information covers the main approaches to community engagement: community service, service-learning, community-based research, community-focused internships, and engaged scholarship.

Service-learning syllabi, full-text journal articles, and e-books are included, as are announcements of engagement-related events, fellowships, and grants.

CEMS is accessible from the CCSI homepage.

Students, faculty, and staff must enter their Barry username and password to log into the system.

Registered community partners also have access.
