Campus Democracy Project Promoting Participation in Elections

This fall Barry will attempt to increase voting activity by energizing students around local concerns. Through the Campus Democracy Project (CDP), the University will work to increase voter turnout by registering student voters and providing voter education about ballot measures and local candidates.

According to Dr. Sean Foreman, associate professor of political science, voter turnout in non-presidential elections is significantly lower than in presidential election years, particularly for younger voters. “What people don’t seem to understand is that the closer to you a political official is located, the more impact they can potentially have on your life, and the more weight each vote has on the outcome,” Foreman said.

Foreman and CCSI Associate Director Courtney Berrien co-chair Barry’s CDP Committee.

The CDP promotes civic engagement through political education and participation in the electoral process. Activities to increase voter participation will include voter registration drives and student debates, Berrien said.

Here is the 2014 election schedule:

· Primary Election Registration Deadline: July 28

· Primary Early Voting: August 11-24

· Primary Deadline to Request an Absentee Ballot: August 20

· Primary Election Day: August 26

· General Election Registration Deadline: October 6

· General Election Early Voting: October 20-November 2

· General Election Deadline to Request an Absentee Ballot: October 29

· General Election Day: November 4

Florida voters can locate their polling location online at http://elections.myflorida.com through Voter Information Lookup.

“We need all of the help we can get for this event,” Volunteer Coordinator Nicole Harris said. “The Garage Sale will be hosted at the House, and morning volunteers will need to arrive at 8 a.m. to help bring down and set up all Garage Sale items. The morning volunteers will stay from 8 a.m. until noon and will be working on setup of the event and the first shift of selling items. We will also need a second shift of volunteers from noon to 4 p.m. to continue helping sell items at the Garage Sale and to assist with putting away any leftover items. Refreshments will be provided for volunteers.”

University Representatives Join Community for Global Leadership Event

Barry faculty, staff, students, and alumni joined local community members at the America’s Global Leadership: Impact on Florida Luncheon recently in Miami, where they interacted with national and world leaders and considered approaches to international development.

Sponsored by the U.S. Global Leadership Coalition, the event was designed to bring attention to the importance of America’s civilian-led tools of development and diplomacy as a means of building a safer, more prosperous global society. Featured speakers included Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz; Congressman Ted Deutch; Secretary of Commerce Carlos Gutierrez (2005-2009); and General James Mattis, Commander of the U.S. Central Combatant Command (2010-2013). Miami Herald World Editor John Yearwood moderated the discussion.

The discussion incorporated liberal and conservative viewpoints and highlighted international aid as a key component of peace-building. Strategies leading to international prosperity suggested by the guest speakers included education and employment of women and girls, immigration reform, and building reciprocal relationships with other countries.

--

Dr. Sean Foreman, associate professor of political science, who coordinated Barry’s participation, noted that our University had the biggest presence of any higher education institution in the Greater Miami area. Barry attendees included representatives of the College of Arts and Sciences, the Andreas School of Business, the Division of Institutional Advancement, and the Division of Student Affairs, as well as current students and alumni.
