Topic: The intersectionality of race, trauma, and social justice in clinical services.

Identifying racial narratives and engaging in social justice-oriented clinical practices with clients of all races.

Learning Objectives

 

Objective #1: Provide a basic overview of the concepts of race, racism, bias, structural racism, and intergenerational trauma and how this impacts the provision of clinical services

 

Objective #2: Provide a context of value in discussing social identities within a clinical setting and how this connects to trauma-specific clinical work

 

Objective #3: Provide a basic overview of assessment tools that can be integrated into clinical practice that examine the role of discrimination, as well as the role of implementing therapeutic modalities.

 

Speakers:

 

Elizabeth Ringler-Jayanthan, LSW

Elizabeth is a social worker and has focused her work on healing trauma. She has worked extensively with survivors of forced migration including refugees, asylum seekers, and survivors of human trafficking in a variety of settings, and recently served at the national headquarters of the Ethiopian Community Development Council (ECDC) in Arlington, VA. Elizabeth currently serves as a trauma therapist with survivors of sexual violence in Pittsburgh, PA.

 

Elizabeth holds a Master of Social Work from Barry University and a Master of Public and International Affairs from the University of Pittsburgh. She is a graduate of the Harvard Program in Refugee Trauma, Global Mental Health Trauma and Recovery Certificate. She has also completed Trauma Sensitive Yoga Teacher training with the Center for Trauma and Embodiment with the Justice Resource Institute.

 

Isabelle Swan-Mae Darling, MSW

Isabelle has over 15 years’ experience working within non-profit and government sectors. She is best known for her trauma-informed mental health work with refugees, survivors of torture, and the agencies that support them.  She has designed tools, training, and courses on community leadership, mental health programming, and cultural awareness for national and global audiences including the Office of Refugee Resettlement, International Rescue Committee, HIAS, International Consortium for Social Development, and the Harvard Program on Refugee Trauma. 

 

Having worked with communities from around the globe who have faced tremendous trauma Isabelle Darling is forever motivated by the resiliency of individuals, families, and communities.  Dedicated to serving as a guide to aid human rights initiatives Isabelle offers grounding approaches in peace, curiosity, intra/intercultural dialogue, the healing properties of storytelling, and leadership training.

 

Isabelle values her life experiences as her most valuable sources of education which she integrates into her education from Hampshire College and Simmons College where she received her MSW.  Isabelle also uses her 200 hr. Yoga Teacher Training to weave the practice of healing centered care, social work, somatic work, and interaction-based leadership together.

 

Isabelle Darling offers a multidisciplinary and healing approach to complex systems and community challenges.
