Student Achievements

Achievements

In accordance with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) Standard 8.1, “The institution identifies, evaluates, and publishes goals and outcomes for student achievement appropriate to the institution’s mission…,” Barry University has identified student achievement metrics, provided appropriate data, established thresholds of acceptability, and explained how each criteria relates to its mission. The student achievement measures identified by the University are:

  1. Retention of first-time, full-time students
  2. Success in developmental courses (math and writing)
  3. Pass rates on the National Council Licensure Examination-Registered Nurse (NCLEX-RN)
  4. Graduation (six-year) of first, time full-time students
  5. Law School Bar pass rates

The Barry University mission statement states that we are a Catholic institution of higher education founded in 1940 by the Adrian Dominican Sisters. Grounded in the liberal arts tradition, Barry University is a scholarly community committed to the highest academic standards in undergraduate, graduate, and professional education. Each measure is in alignment with the University’s mission statement. The University strives to attain the highest student achievement outcomes possible.

The information on this site provides a representation of the accomplishment of our students in meeting these broad goals.

University Student Achievement Indicators

The following indicators have been identified as appropriate measures of student achievement at Barry University:

Indicator #1 Retention of first-time, full-time (FTFT) undergraduates

The US Department of Education and the public generally regard retention of FTFT students as a key indicator of student match with the institution and of the potential for completing a degree within a reasonable amount of time. Barry University has set a threshold for retention of FTFT undergraduates of 56%.

Indicator #2 Successful completion of developmental courses and subsequent first college-level courses in math and writing

A considerable number of the University's first-time, full-time (FTFT) students must complete developmental math and writing courses before they can enroll in college-level courses in those areas. Since the purpose of developmental coursework is to prepare students to earn passing grades in the first college-level math and writing courses, the University monitors the completion of developmental and subsequent first college-level courses, as valid indicators of overall student success.

Indicator #3 First-time pass rates on the National Council Licensure Examination-Registered Nurse (NCLEX) for graduates of the Bachelor of Science, Nursing (BSN) program

Successful completion of the licensure examination is a key measure of student achievement for the traditional undergraduate population. In the past two years, the national pass rate decreased from 87% to 80%, while in the State of Florida, the pass rate dropped from 69% to 64%.   The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), the BSN accrediting body, sets a standard of 80%.

Indicator #4 Graduation rates

First-time, full-time (FTFT) student graduation rates have been identified by SACSCOC as the key student completion indicator (KSCI). The public, in general, considers timely completion of the undergraduate degree as definitive evidence that students are well matched with the institution and that the University provides the support, instruction, and mentoring sufficient to facilitate graduation.

The University reports on the four and six-year graduation rates for FTFT degree-seeking students. These data are disaggregated by gender, race-ethnicity, financial aid status, and first-generation status.

The threshold for the six-year graduation rate is 26%. The goal for six-year graduation rates is 30%.

Indicator #5 Bar pass rates, Law School graduates

Successful completion of the bar exam is a key measure of student achievement for this significant concentration of the graduate/doctoral population.

ABA Standard 316 states that at least 75% of a law school's graduates who sat for a bar examination must have passed a bar examination administered within two years of their date of graduation. The Barry Law School considered 75% to be the threshold for bar pass rates.
