Barry University’s School of Podiatric Medicine announces the establishment of the Dr. Herbert Feinberg Research Scholarship in “Podopediatrics” through a $30,000 gift by the Feinberg Family.
The donation, pledged over three years, will be used to provide research scholarships to Barry podiatric medical students on the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of children’s foot and ankle problems through the Paul & Margaret Brand Research Center.
The late Feinberg was instrumental in the founding of the Barry’s School of Podiatric Medicine in 1985. He served as chairman of the Presidential Advisory Council for the school and donated many of the first textbooks, journals, and scholarship funds. Feinberg was president of the Florida Podiatric Medical Association, delegate to the American Podiatric Medical Association, and editor of the Footprints Journal for more than 20 years.
In 1987 after Feinberg’s untimely death, the Dr. Herbert Feinberg Memorial Scholarship was established by the family. Over the years, this fund has provided more than $30,000 in scholarships to more than 60 Barry podiatric medical students, helping them realize their dreams of becoming podiatric physicians.
The new scholarship will provide one yearly $5,000 research scholarship to a qualified podiatric medical student at Barry who is judged by the faculty to have submitted the best publishable research paper based on their research with a Barry faculty member in the area of “podopediatrics.” The additional $5,000 of the gift will be used by the university to fund research costs associated with conducting the research activities of the awarded research scholarship.
“This major research gift to the School of Podiatric Medicine from the Feinberg Family is greatly appreciated and will continue Dr. Feinberg’s legacy at Barry after the 25th anniversary of his loss,” said Dr. Jeffrey Jensen, dean and professor of podiatric medicine and surgery. “His leadership in spearheading the establishment of the school will be memorialized each time a podiatric medical student conducts research on children’s foot and ankle ailments.”
Barry University has a long history of caring for and treating children’s foot and ankle problems including three foot and ankle institutes as well as the Yucatan Crippled Children’s Project (YCCP). Since 1996, more than 7,400 indigent and crippled children in the Yucatan of Mexico have received treatment and surgeries from Barry’s podiatric physicians on more than 70 mercy flights to Merida through the YCCP.
The Dr. Herbert Feinberg Research Scholarship in ‘Podopediatrics’ is part of a larger effort by the School of Podiatric Medicine through its Paul & Margaret Brand Research Center to establish student research scholarships and position the school to be a leader in lower extremity research. Student scholarships have now been established in vascular medicine, sports medicine/biomechanics, diabetic limb preservation, neuropathy prevention, and “podopediatrics.”
“We are so pleased to continue our support of Barry’s School of Podiatric Medicine, the Feinberg family wrote to the university. “The creation of this institution was very important to our father, Dr. Herbert Feinberg and our family is delighted to honor him by financially assisting Barry’s podiatric medical students."
