The Basics of Play Therapy Workshop with Dr. Peggy Ceballos

Saturday, Nov. 22 | 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. | Landon 110

This interactive workshop will cover the basic concepts of child-centered play therapy. Participants will learn the attitudes and skills necessary to establish and maintain facilitative relationships with children to encourage self-expression and therapeutic change. Video clips and role plays will be used to demonstrate the skills. In addition, participants will have the opportunity to learn the logistics of how to set-up a playroom, including how to put together a portable play therapy kit needed when play sessions have to be conducted at different places.

By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the logistics for setting-up a playroom, including putting together a portable play therapy kit
  • Describe basic child-centered skills, including, tracking, reflection of feelings, enlarging the meaning, returning responsibility, encouragement, limit-setting, and choice giving
  • 3- Explain the theoretical framework for providing child-centered play therapy

About the Presenter:  

Dr. Peggy Ceballos earned a B.A. in psychology from the University of New Orleans and a M.Ed. in counseling from Southeastern Louisiana University. She completed her Ph.D. in counseling in the University of North Texas in 2008. Upon graduation, she joined the Counseling Program faculty at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte as a tenure-track assistant professor where for six years she served as associate director of the Multicultural Play Therapy Center and as coordinator of the School Counseling Program. She is currently an Assistant Professor at the University of North Texas. Ceballos's research agenda addresses multicultural counseling practices and social justice advocacy as well as culturally-responsive play therapy interventions with underserved youth in school settings with a specific focus on Latino populations. She has conducted over 48 professional presentations, including delivering workshops related to play therapy in Mexico. Ceballos has been the recipient of 9 professional awards, including the 2012 Mary Thomas Burke Professional Award for being an exemplary mentor; the 2011 American Counseling Association (ACA) Best Practice Award for best research; and the 2009 Association for Play Therapy (APT) Dissertation Award.
