Olympic scholar Dr. Gilad Weingarten returns to Barry

The School of Human Performance and Leisure Sciences is pleased to welcome back distinguished guest and Olympic Scholar Dr. Gilad Weingarten.

Date: Wednesday, April 11, 2012
Time: 3 p.m. – 4 p.m.
Location: Andreas 112

This will be Dr. Weingarten’s third visit to the Barry University campus. Since 1970, Dr. Weingarten has served in several capacities for the prestigious Wingate Institute, Israel’s National Sport Academy. His positions have included: Director of the National School for Sport Coaches and Instructors, Director of the Department of Research and Sports Medicine, Dean of Graduate Studies and Chair of the Sport Media Department. In addition Dr. Weingarten has served on the Israeli Olympic Committee as Chair of Israel’s Board of Elite Level Sport, Chair of the Sport Department for the 17th (2005) and 18th (2009) Maccabiah Games and Sport Advisor to the Israeli Parliament. He has also been a Track and Field television commentator for 10 Olympics Games (1972 – 2008).

Dr. Weingarten will discuss his own personal experiences as a member of the Israeli delegation to the 1972 Munich Olympic Games. Those games were tragically marred by a terrorist attack on the Israeli team that left 11 athletes dead, forever changed the nature of the Olympics, and ushered in an era of heightened awareness and security surrounding global terrorism. Joining Dr. Weingarten will be Barry University Associate Professor Dr. Daniel Rosenberg who has taught and lectured on the Olympic Movement and who will be screening a documentary film about the Munich Games from award winning filmmaker Bud Greenspan. Following the presentation questions will be taken from audience members.
