The Barry University Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa International invites you to submit proposals to the Biennial PDK Research Symposium. This year’s theme, Social Justice and Advocacy through Educational Research, is intended to inspire participation by a wide variety of researchers: graduate students, educators, and practitioners are especially encouraged to submit proposals. Submission that focus on works in profess, action research, and pedagogy-based research are also encouraged.
Proposal Guidelines
Proposals must be submitted electronically, via email in Microsoft Word to BU_PDK_events@barry.eduby Monday, Nov. 11, 2013.
Submission should consist of a single Microsoft Word file organized into three sections as outlined below. Please also assure that your document includes page numbering in the upper-right header.
Section 1: The Proposal Information, including the following specific items enumerated in the same order as given below.
- Title of the proposal
- First author's name and institutional affiliation
- Desired format (panel, paper, workshop, and poster)
- First author's e-mail address, USPS address, telephone number, and fax number
- Names of co-authors or co-presenters and their institutional affiliations
Section 2: The Program Description must not exceed 50 words and include the following; where appropriate (this is the description of your presentation that will be included in the symposium program):
- Problem Statement
- Methods/procedure/approach
- Results/findings/product
- Conclusion/implications
Section 3: The Proposal Summary, not to exceed 250 words. This summary will provide the material for a blind review of the proposal. It may include the following, where appropriate:
- Title of the presentation
- Purpose
- Rationale and background
- Data source (population, sample, setting)
- Method
- Results and conclusions
- Limitations
- Implications
DO NOT IDENTIFY THE AUTHOR(S) OR INSTITUTIONAL AFFILIATIONS IN THE SUMMARY SECTION.
Presentation Guidelines
All sessions are 50 minutes in length
All presenters must register for the symposium
Panel Session
A panel session is intended to provide an opportunity to examine specific problems, topics or projects from diverse perspectives by various presenters. Topics presented in a panel should be on the same theme and should complement each other. A panel should provide an opportunity for presenters to engage in dialogue, critique and respond to audience comments.
The organizer of a panel is responsible for suggesting the topic, securing speakers, and arranging for a facilitator. If the panel is accepted by the Program Committee, the organizer is responsible for assuring that everyone named as a participant (whether a presenter or facilitator) will be present at the meeting. The Program Committee will notify only the organizer regarding the acceptance of the proposed panel session.
Paper Presentations
Individual papers are grouped by topic into 50 minute sessions. Each paper session will include an introduction by a session discussant, presentation of the papers, and audience questions and reactions. Individual paper presentations in each session will be 12-15 minutes.
Workshop
The workshop forum provides a discussion of a topic and development of its practical application. Participants must provide all the relevant resources, exhibits, and/or materials needed for the workshop. This interactive activity provides opportunities for demonstrations, practice, questioning, and feedback. All topics addressed in the workshop should apply to research or research related areas.
Poster Sessions
The poster session is a high quality visual presentation of a research study. Poster presenters provide attendees with a brief overview and a single page handout of the project. The poster session combines a graphic display of research with the opportunity for informal one-to-one interaction. Presenters remain with their posters during the entire session.
